For today’s blogging challenge, I’m doing a list post. If you’ve seen my previous posts, you know that I recently returned to my hometown of Los Angeles after living in DC for 8 years. I am happy to be home and it was a much-needed return, but I can’t even tell you how much I miss DC and I can’t wait to go back.
With that said, I’m letting my nostalgia lead me and am doing a list of 5 places to go in DC. This list could be much longer, but I didn’t want to get carried away and I wanted to focus on my faves.
1. Cafe Asia -sushi is my favorite food, and this was my favorite place in DC to get it. Also, I enjoy the 2 dollar sake during happy hour. I’ve been to the Rosslyn location too, but I really love the atmosphere in the DC location.
2. Marvin – There’s so much to say about Marvin. I can’t tell what I like best–brunch on Sundays or DJ Stylus on Mondays! Shrimp and Grits is my favorite thing on the menu, but my standout memory of Marvin was going there on a random Thursday for a J-Dilla tribute/DJ Set. One of my most fun times in DC.
3. Perry’s – I added this partly because I just love it and partly because I once went there with Rosetta, my homegirl and the one who originated the 31 Days to a Brand New Blog challenge. It’s another place where you can get sushi, but it’s really a Latin-Japanese fusion kind of place….and they have a fabulous rooftop.
4. Lounge of III – So many great memories were spent at this little bar on 10th and U Streets, NW. Great hip hop music, cheap drinks, what more could a girl ask for?
5.Eatonville - Zora Neale Hurston is my favorite author, and I’ve had some great times at this restaurant on the 14th Street Corridor. Great soul food, decent drinks, and amazing artwork on every wall. And it’s another place Rosetta and I used to hang out
If you live in DC (or you have visited), what are your favorite places in the city? If you live outside of DC, where are your favorite places to go in your city?

If I ever get to DC, I will definitely check out the sushi place. Sounds real yummy right now.
I am just getting to experience the random treats of my city again. But hands down I would have to recommend Long Wong’s if your ever in the city.

I have yet to eat at Cafe Asia or Eatonville. I know, shame on me. But I will definitely explore those spots on your recommendation. As for me, I’ve done all the big clubs in Washington so now my favorite Lounges are Darnell’s (formally Mocha Lounge) and Chi Cha, although I haven’t been there in ages. Perry’s is great, but I’ve never been to Nellie’s for that drag queen show. Tryst and the Diner had its’ time, but I avoid Adam’s Morgan now. My favorite place to eat is Kanlaya, right now, although Absolut Thai has some great Sticky Rice.

You know, I’ve never been to Darnell’s but I wanna check it out when I go to DC, maybe this October! Chi Cha is great, especially if you’re a hookah smoker like me. Yeah, I try to stay away from adams morgan after about 9pm, though I do enjoy amsterdam falafel!

I love lists such as these. Its a breath of fresh air from common sites like Yelp and others. Here in Chicago, I always tell people get out and enjoy not only the city of other suburbs and little towns within the city. There’s more than just the Loop.

I’ve been in DC a little over a year, and already I have a few favorite places! You didn’t mention my personal favorite, Busboys and Poets! With 3 locations in the DMV, nothing beats the original one on 14th and V Sts. NW. It’s so eclectic, and any time someone comes to visit me this is where I take them! I also like Jin, which is a few doors down from BBP (and from Marvin’s). Very nice atmosphere, plus they have a great happy hour. And I recently visited Lounge of III for the first time a few weeks back. I thought it was a pretty nice spot and definitely plan on going back. Oh, and there’s a new place on 9th and Florida Ave NW. It’s called Darnell’s/Mocha Lounge. It’s a nice chill spot, a place to go and relax, especially if you don’t feel like the typical U St. crowd.

Busboy’s and Poets is great for an on-the-fly meal. And yes, Jin is a lot of fun, it’s a pretty diverse crowd too.
You’re the second person to mention Darnell’s so i’m definitely checking it out next time I’m in DC!

Busboys – Great place to lounge/work/play.
Eatonville– eh…not really feelin it.
Founding Farmers – Right now, I’m swearing by it.
Social (Columbia Heights) – Always low key spot (at least when I’ve been there), and when you can get it, the shrimp and grits there are SERIOUS! Haven’t sampled it a Marvin…maybe I should.
OYA – When I want sushi, this is a great spot. The whole atmosphere is great too.
Patty Boom Boom – Yes, the patties are expensive ($5), but they are the best ones I’ve had in this city. NYC…different story lol. Also, old school reggae band on Tues evening..let’s just say de band deh play some wicked chunes!

went to social a few months ago. incredibly laid back, great drinks.
Oya is actually my favorite restaurant in DC besides Georgia Brown’s. yes, the food at Founding Farmers is exception.
I can’t believe you don’ t like Eatonville!

I lived in DC for few years ago; and I’m actually going to visit this upcoming weekend (sooooo looking forward to it!). Hopefully I’ll have a chance to check out Lounge of III. I’ve never been there before. Man, I can’t wait to go to Busboys & Poets. #goodtimes.

Ben’s Next Door has a great neighborhood bar feel. The food is so-so to me, but I do enjoy the drinks!
