Sonia Sotomayor named to the US Supreme Court

Posted by: elledub08 on: May 27, 2009

Most of you by now have heard about this story, but I can’t tell you how excited and happy that a woman of color has been nominated for the supreme court. I am intentional with saying woman of color and not just Latina. I think Liza Sabater from Culture Kitchen said it best:

Sonia Sotomayor considers herself a woman of color, not just a “Hispanic”. She’s a proud puertorriqueña and a Latina, not some form of white-washed eurocentric spanish-speaking acceptable version of a WASP.

As a Black American woman, I’m happy and proud of Obama’s choice for the supreme court. When I was younger I thought I could only really relate to and act on behalf of Black women. As I get older, though, I have become an advocate for all women of color, as in some ways we all share a collective experience.

Most of the racist and sexist attacks on Sotomayor aren’t surprising to me. I knew people would claim she was loud, “ghetto”, and unfit for the Supreme Court. I knew conservatives would say she is a token. None of it surprises me.

The truth is that in Sonia Sotomayor we have a wise, intelligent, powerful woman of color who understands the plight of working class people. We have someone who I believe will bring a new level of experience and also dignity to the Supreme Court.

AMEN. I feel you Loryn. We are moving to higher levels as a country. I am proud to be an American….

I have yet to blog about Ms. Sotomayor because I just don’t know enough about her (yet). But if I had to write an entry right now, my sentiments would mirror your words.

Good blog.

great post! it’s exactly how i’m feeling right now. so proud to be a WOC today! i also think it’s so telling that the cases that are coming up as “controversial” are all ones that focus on issues of working class people and people of color. whatever, i’m gonna just enjoy the feeling until the hearings begin :-) !

In King v. American Airlines Inc., Judge Sotomayor ruled against an African-American couple who claimed they were bumped from a flight because of their race. The judge concluded their case was pre-empted by international law that governs air travel. “We urged a different interpretation, but her decision was in conformity with what other courts were doing,” said Robert Isseks, a New York attorney who represented the plaintiffs. “We were paddling upstream.”

Judge Sotomayor isn’t always a reliable vote for employees. In 1999, she ruled against a black nurse who claimed she had been fired from a New York hospital due to her race and age, as well as a debilitating injury. Judge Sotomayor ruled that the plaintiff, Wendy Norville, could move ahead on her disability claim, but tossed out the race and age claims.

and who’s to say that she did that because of the nature of the case?

also, link it or it didn’t happen.

sorry, but that’s just how we roll on here.

Beautiful post! I was overwhelmed with joy when Ms. Sotomayor was named to the supreme court. 2008-2009 has been such an amazing year of change for US as a people! Mark it – Amen!!!
