Double Standard Alert: Hagee Endorses McCain March 7, 2008

So just last week, Televangelist John Hagee endorsed John McCain. For those who don’t know, John Hagee is the Pastor of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas and also has a show that airs regularly on TBN.

This might be a very dangerous move for McCain. Hagee is part of the religious right–and as a Christian myself, I have to say that his stances on things like abortion, gay marriage, and even Catholicism is not only polarizing but will make McCain look even worse–and some analysts have already touched on this:

[Hagee] has referred to the Roman Catholic Church as “the great whore” and called it a “false cult system.”

“Indeed, for the past few decades, he has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church,” said Catholic League President Bill Donohue. (from The Associated Press)

Many of you read my post about Farrakhan’s endorsement of Obama. It’s crazy to me how Republicans and some Democrats were so quick to scrutinize this endorsement–however here we have John Hagee, who’s views are just as dangerous to our society as Farrakhan’s. Of course, this double standard doesn’t surprise me, but it has also been suggested that perhaps McCain needs to “endorse and renounce” Hagee’s endorsement:

“Senator Obama has repudiated the endorsement of Louis Farrakhan, another bigot,” Donohue said. “McCain should follow suit and retract his embrace of Hagee.”

Only time will tell of course, but I’m willing to bet money that Sen. McCain won’t be feeling the heat over this endorsement…
